This day it was continued very cold with more snow in the night and into the forenoon and I am told of a poor guard in the trenches found dead of the cold this morning; we of the horse have worry of our mounts with the cold and especially the getting of provender for them; the Low Countries bands did muster this day and with the rest of us aguarding in the trenches in our turns and even my Lord and his gentlemen watching like unto the least pikeman and always with a brave word for all his men even when the bullets thick did fly as ‘twas this day; I am told that Yorke who was down in the nearmost part of the trenches to the enemy with the pioneers was hurt from flying splinters bad upon the head and was carried back out of his senses and bloody but the surgeon doth say he is not so hurt as it did seem and that he would recover although with a great scar upon his forehead; I and many others of my troop in the trenches all the day ashooting our pistols and petronels at those upon the walls and our opposites in the trenches, I know not if our shots did slay any of them but I should think that at least it did worry them, but oh how one would rather go at it hand to fist rather than in this skulking way of war.
