I had the pleasure of seeing him several times at the Met in the late 70s when he was at the height of his career. I was a such fan and even managed to corral him at the Met's stage door for autographs and even a kiss when he wasn't giving autographs! His acting was simple (Domingo was much more skilled in that regard) but that voice! And those high C's! Incredible! Recordings and video do it no justice, the electricity in the hall was palpable.
He will be sadly missed but at least we had him longer than Caruso.
