lucianus: (infantry)
So here I am, at work on a rainy day. I supposed there could be worse places to be. Hopefully it will be quiet.

My Roman military equipment project is going along apace. Yesterday night I used the tap and die to thread the pommel nut and the tang of the sword. I need to get some very fine grit sandpaper on my way home to finish off the hilt and pommel then that part of the program will be done. Many thanks to Fergus who let me use his orbital palm sander for the shaping work, it made a huge difference. I started smoothing down the scabbard last night. I think I will paint it as that seems to have been an accepted treatment, altho I do have some leather that would be ok as a covering. I have a lot of sewing yet to do on the baldric altho the stitched design is looking nice.

The helmet is done and I have new fittings for my belt that need to go on. My shield is coming along but the paint (I used oil paint) is taking FOREVER to dry. I'm actually concerned about it being dry enough to finish and use next weekend. It looks spiff tho, I decided to go with the four color design like the little guy on my icon from the Piazza Amerina.

There's still a lot to do, but I think I can finish it in time. Cross your fingers for me!
