I haven't had the mental cycles to post much lately, except for my rant against UPS, so here's a bit of what's been going on with me lately...

Work is continuing on the paper for Kalamazoo. I have been gathering the illustrations and creating the PowerPoint presentation. It certainly is mentally draining. It is also somewhat frustrating. I have been working on this afterhours at work because I have an up to date version of the program on my machine, Jdulac does not and will need to upgrade before I can show off all my work.

I worked Saturday which means a one-day weekend but also additional comp time.

On Sunday I journeyed to southern NH for a combat archery practice. It was great fun! We did a bunch of target shooting in armor (very good practice on a lot of levels) and then some 4 on 4 skirmishes with a sword and shield man on each team. It certainly pointed up to me that I need to finish working on my new armor. There is a combined CA/heavy practice in NH this Sunday that I hopefully will be able to get up to as well and another regional CA practice on May 20.

Sorry for missing the CA practice, but things are running pretty busy over here. I need to work on getting my armor together, so that it's actually worthwhile for me to go to one of these.

(Speaking of which: remind me of the URL for the guy who does the little plates?)

Hey! There will be another practice on Apr 23 as well in Weare, NH. I'm hoping to get out to at least part of it.

The plastic plates come from http://www.plasticlamellar.com/ If you decide to go with gold auk plates I will probably have some I can sell you. I definitely bought too many.

Hmm. The only reason I can come up with *not* to go with the gold auk plates would be if I wanted something different so you and I wouldn't get our armor mixed up. That's a fairly weak reason, though, and the gold auk appeals -- it's the least hot of my colors of choice, and the smaller plates should be easier to fit. So yes, I'll probably take you up on that.

About how many plates did you use, and how many do you have left over? I'm just a shade smaller than you, so I suspect that putting together a kit of about as many as you used should be about right. Also, how much cord did you need?

We'll see about the 23rd -- that's too soon for me to have any chance of having armor together, and I have other project that will need my attention before May Day. But I won't rule it out...

The gold is pretty nice looking, i've been very pleased by how it has come out. I've ended up shortening it from when I first put it together, I realized I'd need to bend more than I was allowing for. I haven't actually used in combat yet, so much will depend on that test run.

Let me count them tonight. I plan to work on a belt to go with it this evening so I'll be fiddling around with it. I'll also count up how many spare plates I have. I want to keep some in case of breakage/modifications but I'd be more than happy to sell you the rest. I bought a huge roll of cord from a place in AZ (they use it for making horse tack) so you are more than welcome to buy some off my roll, I have loads. One thing you'll probably want to do with the cord is pull the inner core out of it. While I didn't have a problem lacing it, it would make the cord a little less bulky.

Well there's also the practice on May 20 as well. I'll need to make us some extra bowstrings before then as well. The ones we've got are fraying.

I just counted the number of plates in my armor and it totals 609. I may add a few more or shift some around but that's probably a good number to estimate. I also counted my remaining plates and i have 200 I could sell you and that would still leave me with plenty for breakages, etc.

What think you?

That works -- I'll buy those 200 off of you, and buy probably another 500 from the website to give me enough to make my own and still have plenty left over for damage...

Great, it sounds like a plan! I talked with Karl M. who wears armor made of the larger plates and he says they do sometimes break but not too much and that its easy to just unstring them and work in a new one. I've made mine with side openings but you could do a front opening if you wanted to.
