Roots Trip

This past week we have been on a trip to visit [livejournal.com profile] jdulac 's extended family in the Midwest (yes, believe it or not, J has quite a lot of aunts and cousins in that part of the world). We visited elderly aunts, attended a family reunion, explored the old hometown, walked around some cemeteries and had a grand lefse making session. I also took some photos some of which I will be posting over the next few days.

Some observations...
  • The topography is rather different than I had expected. The land in Minneapolis-St.Paul and over into western Wisconsin was far more rolling than I would have thought. It reminded me of central and western New York State.
  • There certainly are a lot of blond haired people there, aren't there?
  • I love cheese, but they seem to eat cheese on absolutely everything. (Including an odd melted variety rather like cream colored cheez whiz.)
  • Spend the little bit of extra money and get the full-sized car, its worth it.
  • For lefse, the potatoes must be cooked to death and riced to within an inch of their lives. The dough should be the consistency of a "firm breast" (that's what I was told by the experts and who am I to argue). Also, as in anything, the proper tools make all the difference, a lefse stick is so much easier to use than a bamboo skewer.
